About Shanghai Alley

We’re a family-owned Chinese restaurant serving authentic, handmade dim sum alongside a full menu of classic Chinese dishes. From fresh dumplings to sizzling stir-fries, everything is made in-house using traditional recipes and bold flavors passed down through generations.

Located at 1148 Kildaire Farm Rd, Cary, NC 27511, Shanghai Alley operates as a chinese restaurant serving Cary in North Carolina. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it. Google also lists it under asian restaurant, dim sum restaurant, seafood restaurant, which is worth knowing if you are comparing several options in the area.

In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Cary; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in North Carolina are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. The most common schedule is 11 am–9:30 pm. Note that it does not open on Tuesday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (919) 380-2900. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, shanghaialleync.com.

Its Google rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 827 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.

We had another lovely family lunch at Shanghai Alley this weekend! We have been here multiple times, and the food and service are consistently excellent. The beautiful, spacious interior always makes for a great dining atmosphere. During this visit, we loved the fried rice, vegetable lo mein, and the mixed veggies with tofuβ€”everything was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. My favorite dish is Kung Pao Chicken. Service was quick and efficient as always. If you are in the Cary area, I highly recommend checking this Chinese restaurant out!

My second visit to Shanghai Alley is exactly why I believe in second chances. I honestly was not very impressed during my first visit, but coming back again completely changed my opinion because this place really shined the second time around. They offer a huge variety of dishes ranging from classic Chinese and American Chinese food to handmade dim sum made fresh in house. Everything we tried was packed with flavor, especially the walnut shrimp which I’m still thinking about. The roasted duck and char siu were also standout dishes and you can really tell they put care into the food here. I also love that they specialize in both Sichuan and Cantonese dishes, so there’s something for everyone depending on what flavors you’re craving. If you want the full dim sum cart experience, definitely stop by on the weekends from 11 to 2. It made the experience feel even more authentic and fun. This visit completely won me over and I’ll definitely be back to keep exploring the menu.

My imperial beef gets one star, and my girlfriend's dry pot chicken gets another. I can't give the other three stars because we waited 40 minutes only to be told the spare ribs were sold out, even though there were only three other families there. We didn't get drinks after running out of water and trying to call a waiter. We had to wait an extra 30 minutes for our food on top of the initial 40 minutes. The waiter was okay. Nice waiter...but I can see why this restaurant has a low rating.

I’ve been here a couple of times, and the food always surprises me. I usually stick to my favorites, but this time my friend recommended I try something new, and it turned out to be excellent. We loved everything we ordered. The staff is very nice and friendly. Plus, the portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. 10/10!!!

We’ve been sitting here for 29 minutes. We at least got water and grabbed some egg rolls and a plate of greens from the dim sum cart but it only came by once and we have yet to get even plates. I am eating off a napkin. The vegetable was good but not the egg roll. Can’t say much more than that because the service is so terrible. Never got a menu-had to get one myself. Never offered tea or anything else to drink. Tried ordering duck off the menu three times and were told each time to wait. So we gave up. EDIT: spouse went up and got some plates himself after 45 minutes. Never could order any entrees off the menu but eventually we got enough to eat off the dim sum carts. The ladies pushing those were nice, at least.
